Permits and inspections in Austin
- 01
Who issues electrical permits: Austin Development Services. Electrical permits are requested through the Austin Build + Connect (AB+C) portal, and contractor registration runs through Building and Trade Contractor Services.
- 02
How to apply: Online in AB+C by a licensed electrical contractor registered with the city (registered every year, with an AB+C account). Commercial jobs that need more than one trade permit, or that tie to a building permit, go through Commercial Plan Review. Work starts only once the permit is approved, paid and active.
- 03
Typical review time: The city does not publish times for standalone electrical permits. Commercial Plan Review runs 1 business day for Quick Turnaround, 5 for small projects, and 10 to 20 for remodels, depending on size.
- 04
Inspections: The city inspects the work before power goes back on. On a service rebuild, Austin Energy schedules the outage, the city inspection has to pass, and then Austin Energy re-energizes.
- 05
What trips up out-of-town contractors: Austin enforces the 2026 NEC (since September 1, 2026) with its own local amendments. Every EV charger needs a permit, and commercial EV jobs cannot use trade-only permitting.
- 06
Utility coordination: Austin Energy. New or changed service needs an Electric Service Planning Application (ESPA). Larger services go through Austin Energy Design Intake in AB+C with a site plan and riser diagram; smaller ones are submitted by email, and the stamped ESPA is attached to the city permit. We file it for you.

Austin questions
- 01
Do I need a permit to swap a breaker in Austin? Not for a breaker or fuse of the same rating in the same spot. Panel and service work is not on the city's exempt list, so it needs a permit.
- 02
Can work start as soon as we apply? No. In Austin the permit has to be approved, paid and active before work starts.
- 03
Who deals with Austin Energy on a service upgrade? We do. Your electrician files the ESPA, and the approved copy goes with the city permit.
