Permits and inspections in Staples

Our electrical contractor license (TECL #39622) is statewide. We file the permit, handle the utility paperwork and meet the inspector.

Who issues electrical permits: City of Staples (mailing address P.O. Box 27). The city website has a Building Permits and Inspections page, but it did not show application details when checked. City Council considered contracting with Bureau Veritas for building plan reviews and inspections in October 2021.

  • 02

How to apply: Not published on the city website. Contact the city office for the commercial application and submittal list.

  • 03

Inspections: Not published. An October 19, 2021 council agenda lists an action item on contracting with Bureau Veritas for the city's building plan reviews and inspections; whether that contract is current was not confirmed.

  • 04

What to know locally: Staples' Municipal Building Code (Ordinance 2021-11-16) adopts the 2020 National Electrical Code, the 2018 International Building Code and the 2018 International Mechanical, Plumbing and Fuel Gas Codes for commercial work, with no local amendments. The ordinance applies inside the city and in its ETJ as applicable. Water comes from Crystal Clear, not the city. The city has a Historic Preservation board and a Planning and Zoning ordinance with a zoning map.

  • 05

Utility coordination: Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative; Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC) also maps service here. The city's New Resident Resources page names Bluebonnet Electric for electric service, and Bluebonnet's tariff lists Staples among the communities it serves. GVEC's service territory map also places the Staples town point inside GVEC's area, so confirm the provider for the address. Bluebonnet inspects the meter loop before connecting any new or existing location ($125 per re-inspection). GVEC energizes after the city confirms a passed inspection.

Typical review time: Not published by the city.
