How to apply: Apply through the Development Portal. All contractors doing permitted work must register with the city through the same portal, and some must also hold a state license. Electrical masters and electrical contractors pay no registration or renewal fee. Registration runs January 1 to December 31 each year. The city offers a permit fee estimator and an adopted fee schedule.

What to know locally: Schertz says it will adopt the 2026 National Electrical Code effective September 1, 2026, and permit applications filed on or after that date with non-exempt electrical work must comply. Construction hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, with no outdoor work on Sunday. General contractors must show at least $300,000 in general liability insurance to register.

Utility coordination: Not confirmed on an official page for Schertz. GVEC has a customer service center in Schertz. If the site is on GVEC, the owner first gets zoning, survey and city permits, then sends GVEC a commercial request for information, expected load and voltage needs. GVEC energizes after the city tells it the inspection passed. If the site is on CPS Energy, CPS needs the city's electric inspection release before it sets the meter.
