Our electrical contractor license (TECL #39622) is statewide. We file the permit, handle the utility paperwork and meet the inspector.
- 01
Who issues electrical permits: City of New Braunfels Development Services, Building Safety Division, through the Online Permit Portal (nbpermits.nbtexas.org).
- 02
How to apply: Apply online; electrical is a stand-alone permit type, and only license holders or authorized signers can apply for electrical permits. Electrical contractors must register with the Building Safety Division through the portal with a state license, photo ID and a certificate of liability insurance naming the city ($300,000 minimum).
- 03
Inspections: Request inspections in the online portal only; emailed requests stopped August 19, 2024. Commercial inspections are scheduled for the next business day between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, and the site must be open for access.
- 04
What to know locally: The city uses the 2021 ICC codes and the 2020 NEC. Trade registrations renew yearly, from 60 days before to 30 days after expiration.
- 05
Utility coordination: New Braunfels Utilities (NBU). Inside city limits NBU needs proof of an approved city building permit. A passed city inspection is required before NBU releases orders to set temporary or permanent meters, and NBU does its own inspection after it receives the approved city inspection.
- 06
Typical review time: Not published by the city.
