Permits and inspections in Marion

Our electrical contractor license (TECL #39622) is statewide. We file the permit, handle the utility paperwork and meet the inspector.

Who issues electrical permits: City of Marion Permits, City Hall at 303 S. Center Street. Applications are PDF forms on the city's Permits page, turned in by email or in person. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for lunch.

How to apply: File the Commercial Permit Application for new construction, additions, remodels or finish-outs, with two sets of construction documents (site, floor, elevation, electrical, mechanical and plumbing plans, commercial energy code compliance and foundation details as they apply). The contractor of record and every subcontractor must be registered with the city; registration asks for a copy of the driver's license, the state license and a certificate of liability insurance. Each trade then pulls its own permit under the master building permit number. The Electrical Permit Application says only license holders or authorized signers may apply, and fees are based on project valuation. Fees are paid in person by cash, check or money order.

Inspections: Bureau Veritas is the city's third-party inspector. Request inspections from Bureau Veritas by phone or email with the permit number and the inspection type. All permits require a final inspection.

  • 04

What to know locally: Marion adopted the 2015 International Building Code by Ordinance 15-20. Work started without a permit is charged 2.5 times the permit fee, and fees must be paid before inspections. A permit is void if work does not start within 180 days or stops for 180 days. A certificate of occupancy is required before any building is occupied. The commercial form asks whether the site is in a floodplain and uses the address assigned by Guadalupe County.

Utility coordination: Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC). GVEC's service territory map places Marion inside GVEC's service area. GVEC's commercial checklist starts with the owner getting zoning, survey and city permits, then sending GVEC a commercial request for information with the expected load and voltage needs. GVEC designs and builds the line, transformer and metering; the owner's electrician builds the secondary service, the owner requests city inspections, and GVEC energizes after the city tells it the inspection passed.
