Our electrical contractor license (TECL #39622) is statewide. We file the permit, handle the utility paperwork and meet the inspector.
- 01
Who issues electrical permits: City of La Grange Building Department (Building and Code Enforcement), City Hall, 155 E. Colorado St. The department reviews construction drawings, issues permits and inspects work. No online portal; applications are PDF or fillable PDF forms.
- 02
How to apply: File the city's Electrical Permit Application, with separate building, plumbing, mechanical and gas permit applications as needed. Return forms by mail, in person to the Building Inspector at City Hall, or by email. Electrical permit fees are based on the type of work, and permit fees are paid by cash or check only; the city does not take credit cards. The city's electric department says electrical permits go only to a bonded, licensed electrical contractor or a homestead owner doing their own work, and City Hall issues electrical licenses.
- 03
Inspections: Call the Building Department to schedule. The city says inspections are done as soon as possible after the request, and 24 hours' notice is preferred.
- 04
What to know locally: The city's electric department says all electrical work needs an electrical permit from the city. Work in a flood zone needs a separate Floodplain Development permit with a review checklist. The city has a Building Board of Adjustment and Appeal that hears hardship appeals and appeals of the Building Official's interpretations. The code of ordinances is on eCode360, and the city posts zoning, city limits and ETJ maps.
- 05
Utility coordination: City of La Grange (La Grange Utilities, city-owned electric system). The city operates its own electric, water, sewer and sanitation systems. La Grange Utilities will not turn on service until the city has inspected and released the property; the Planning and Building Department notifies the utility in writing. Commercial customers fill out the Commercial Service Application and Agreement, and the deposit equals 60 days of estimated billing at the location, paid before connection. The building department also posts meter loop specifications. Temporary service installation is $50.
- 06
Typical review time: Not published by the city.
