Who issues electrical permits: City of Gonzales Building Permits and Inspections (Community Development Department), led by the city's Building Official at 1920 St. Joseph Street. Applications can be filed online or emailed, and fees can be paid online. The city stops issuing permits at 4 p.m. each day.
- 02
How to apply: Commercial electrical work uses the city's Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing permit application. Check Commercial, pick the scope (new construction, shell building, addition, tenant finish-out, remodel, repair or electrical panel only), and choose an Attachment permit if the job also has a building permit or a Trade permit if it stands alone. The applicant is the master licensee with license number or the owner with a signed affidavit. The city says it contacts applicants within 1 to 3 business days after an application is submitted. Work started without a permit can be charged 3 times the permit price.
- 03
Typical review time: The city says it will contact you within 1 to 3 business days after an online application is submitted. No plan review time is published.
- 04
Inspections: Inspections are done Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and must be requested 24 hours in advance, according to the city's MEP permit application.
- 05
What to know locally: Gonzales posts its adopted building codes on eCode360. Commercial jobs must lease roll-off dumpsters from Frontier Waste. Outside city limits, Gonzales County requires floodplain, septic and driveway permits, plus fire permits and plan review for commercial buildings, and has no zoning in unincorporated areas.
- 06
Utility coordination: City of Gonzales Electric Department (city-owned). The city's Electric Department maintains electric service for Gonzales and Harwood, runs new services and builds new lines. The city buys power from LCRA, with some local production from the city's hydro plant. Billing and new accounts are handled by the Utility Department at City Hall, 820 St. Joseph Street; residential deposits are due at application. GVEC's service territory map marks the town as served by the City of Gonzales, outside GVEC's area.
