Commercial ProjectsPermits and inspections in Georgetown
- 01
Who issues electrical permits: Building Permits and Inspections, part of Georgetown Development Services. Permits are requested through the My Government Online (MGO Connect) portal.
- 02
How to apply: Online in MGO. Electrical contractors register with the city first; registration is free and done in MGO. On new construction the electrical permit goes under the main building permit, and commercial building permits need a full plan set that includes the electrical plans.
- 03
Typical review time: The city does not publish times for standalone electrical permits. Commercial building permits take about 30 business days for first review and 25 for the first resubmittal, with no expedite option.
- 04
Inspections: Request inspections in MGO by 3 p.m. for the next business day (not guaranteed). Service rebuilds need two inspections, one at disconnect and one at reconnect, requested 48 hours ahead.
- 05
What trips up out-of-town contractors: Georgetown has three electric providers, so the first question on any service job is who serves the address. Services over 400 A on the city's electric utility need a Line Extension Permit.
- 06
Utility coordination: Georgetown Electric Utility, Oncor or PEC, depending on the address (the city's Electric Service Providers map shows which). With the city utility, the meter work order is scheduled 7 to 10 business days after the permanent power inspection passes. Oncor sets commercial meters and reconnects after rewiring only once the city inspection has passed.
