Who issues electrical permits: Dime Box is unincorporated, so there is no city permit office. Lee County Development Services in Giddings (200 South Main) takes development applications for all unincorporated areas of the county.
- 02
How to apply: Lee County says applications must be submitted for all development in unincorporated areas, including commercial projects, and a permit is required for any single structure over 100 square feet. Get a 9-1-1 address first. The county fee for a business application is $100 and for an industrial application $250. Septic systems need their own permit ($500 for commercial). The county does not list an electrical permit or contractor registration.
- 03
What to know locally: Lee County's permit is tied to its Flood Damage Prevention Order. If any part of the property is in the 100-year floodplain, non-residential buildings must be elevated or flood-proofed, utility equipment and switches must be elevated to limit flood damage, and an engineer or surveyor must certify the result. Building without the application carries a $250 penalty, or $1,000 in the floodplain.
- 04
Utility coordination: Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative (its tariff lists Dime Box among the communities it serves). Bluebonnet requires a meter loop inspection at every new and existing location before it connects service, and charges $125 for each re-inspection. For new commercial service it asks for CAD site plan files, load information and a project schedule, and its cost estimates are good for 60 days.
