Who issues electrical permits: Development Services, Building Permits and Inspections Division; online through MGO Connect (My Government Online)
- 02
How to apply: Apply online through MGO Connect. All contractors, new and existing, must register with the city in MGO Connect (Register as a Contractor); there is no fee. Remodels that move or remove walls or change electrical work need a permit, as do generators, EV chargers and solar.
- 03
Typical review time: Commercial projects: typically 10 business days for initial review and 10 business days for each re-review (residential 5 to 7 business days).
- 04
Inspections: Schedule in MGO Connect. Requests made before 3 pm go on the next business day's schedule (not guaranteed); unfinished inspections roll to the next business day. For emergency electrical service repair permits, the city dispatches an inspector once notified the work is done.
- 05
What to know locally: Cedar Park adopted the 2020 National Electrical Code and the 2021 International codes, with local amendments, effective June 1, 2022. Permits expire if work does not start within 180 days or stops for 180 days.
- 06
Utility coordination: Pedernales Electric Cooperative (most of the city); Austin Energy (portions). PEC brings power to the site, sets the meter and energizes the service. The customer handles permits and inspections. Meter sockets must be UL listed and meet PEC specifications, and PEC will refuse service where a known hazard exists.
